Entering India for the Kumbh — Which Airport

For NRI visitors flying from the US, UK, Canada, UAE, Australia, Singapore and most other NRI destinations, the entry point matters. The options for Nashik Kumbh: Mumbai (BOM/CSIA) is the natural gateway — maximum international flight connectivity, 200 km from Trimbakeshwar by road or 45-minute flight + 55-km drive from Nashik. Pune (PNQ) has good international connectivity to Gulf countries (Air India, Emirates, Etihad, IndiGo) and some Southeast Asia routes. Delhi (DEL) is the most connected international hub but adds 4 to 5 hours of onward travel.

For most NRIs, the routing is: international flight to Mumbai → domestic to Nashik (book in advance, Nashik flights will be competitive during Kumbh) or car/train to Nashik from Mumbai. Given that Kumbh 2027 coincides with peak monsoon travel season, book all domestic connections by March 2027 at the latest.

OCI, Visa and Entry Requirements

OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders: no visa required, no registration required (the previous OCI Registration requirement for stays over 180 days was removed in 2021). Carry the OCI card and the corresponding foreign passport together at all times in India — both are required for official identification. Keep photocopies separate from the originals.

Foreign nationals (non-OCI): an Indian tourist visa is required. The e-Visa (applied online, approved within 3–5 days, valid for 60 days from first entry) covers the Kumbh visit. No specific Kumbh tourism visa exists. Apply for the e-Visa at least 4 days before travel and ideally 2 weeks in advance.

Note: religious travel to India is classified as tourist entry under a standard tourist visa. There are no special pilgrimage visa requirements.

Planning Your Complete India Trip Around the Kumbh

Many NRI families use the Nashik Kumbh as an anchor for a broader India trip — arriving 1 to 2 weeks before the Kumbh, spending time in Mumbai with family, and then coming to the Kumbh, then continuing to another destination (Goa, Kerala, a family hometown) afterward. This structure works well and makes the Kumbh the centerpiece of a meaningful homecoming trip rather than a standalone event.

On arrival in Mumbai, exchange a modest amount of currency at the airport for immediate cash needs, but avoid changing large sums there given weaker airport exchange rates — city banks and authorised dealers offer meaningfully better rates. An Indian SIM or a pre-arranged eSIM with Indian coverage is worth sorting in the arrivals hall or before travel, since reliable connectivity from the moment you land makes every subsequent step of the journey easier.

UPI-based digital payments are now near-universal in India, including at Kumbh-area shops and stalls, so a linked Indian bank account or a UPI-enabled international payment app can reduce how much cash you need to carry.

Jet Lag and Physical Preparation for the Journey

NRI visitors arriving from the US, UK, Canada or Australia are typically crossing multiple time zones just before a physically demanding pilgrimage schedule of pre-dawn Snan days — this combination catches many first-time NRI visitors off guard. We strongly recommend building at least one full rest day into your itinerary between international arrival and your first pre-dawn Kumbh activity.

Several NRI guests have told us skipping this buffer in favour of maximising pilgrimage days actually cost them more, as jet lag caught up mid-stay rather than being absorbed before the demanding schedule began.

Travel Insurance and International Health Coverage

We strongly recommend NRI and international visitors carry travel insurance that explicitly covers India, including emergency medical evacuation, given the specific physical demands and crowd density of a Kumbh pilgrimage. Standard domestic health insurance from your home country typically doesn't extend coverage to India, and this gap is worth closing before you travel rather than discovering it during an emergency.
