The Four Routes from Pune
Pune to Trimbakeshwar is 240 km — farther than Mumbai, but with less traffic-generating population directly on the route. The four approaches: NH-60 via Sangamner (most direct, 4–4.5 hours on normal days). NH-548 toward Nashik city and then Nashik-Trimbak Road (slightly longer, better road quality on most sections). Via Igatpuri and the Kasara Ghat (a scenic hill route, 4.5 hours, beautiful but not suitable for large buses). Pune to Nashik by Shivneri or other state bus, then local bus/taxi to Trimbakeshwar (5–6 hours total, most economical).
For private car drivers from Pune: the NH-60 via Sangamner route is the standard choice. The road quality has improved significantly in the past five years and this is now a comfortable expressway-quality drive for most of the distance. Fuel yourself in Sangamner — fuel options thin out between there and Nashik city.
Train Options from Pune
There is no direct train from Pune to Nashik Road. The options: Pune to Nashik Road via Mumbai (change at Pune → Mumbai → Nashik Road — total journey 6+ hours, not recommended). Pune to Manmad Junction (approximately 3 hours), then Manmad to Nashik Road by local train or taxi (another 1.5 hours). Or the direct MSRTC Shivneri / Punit bus from Pune to Nashik city — this is the most used Pune-Nashik connection and runs frequently with premium air-conditioned coaches.
For Kumbh Ganga Retreat guests arriving from Pune: we recommend the Shivneri bus to Nashik CBS (2.5 to 3 hours from Pune Swargate) followed by our complimentary pickup from Nashik CBS — this is the most reliable, cost-effective and comfortable option.
Kumbh Traffic from Pune
Pune traffic toward Nashik on Snan days is less severe than Mumbai traffic, but it exists. The Sangamner-Nashik stretch on NH-60 can slow significantly for a 20 to 30 km section approaching Nashik city on major Snan days. The Pune departure timing recommendation is similar to Mumbai: leave the evening before a Snan day rather than the morning of.
For return journeys from Trimbakeshwar to Pune after a Snan: wait. The post-Snan traffic surge on the Nashik-Trimbak Road peaks at 2 to 5 PM. By 7 PM it has usually cleared. Leave at 7 PM, have an easy Nashik dinner, reach Pune by midnight. Trying to leave at 3 PM turns a 4-hour drive into a 7-hour one. The Igatpuri Ghat Route — For the Scenic Traveller
For pilgrims not in a hurry, the Igatpuri-Kasara Ghat route offers something the faster NH-60 doesn't — genuine Sahyadri scenery, waterfalls in full monsoon flow, and a slower, more contemplative pace that some travellers find fits the pilgrimage mindset better than a straight highway run. This route adds perhaps 30 to 45 minutes over the direct NH-60 option but rewards it with a memorable drive.
We don't recommend this route for large buses or on Snan days themselves, given the ghat road's tighter curves and lower capacity, but for a relaxed non-Snan-day arrival or departure, it's genuinely one of the more beautiful drives in the region.
Fuel, Rest Stops and Practical Driving Notes
For self-driving pilgrims from Pune: fuel up thoroughly in Sangamner, since the stretch between there and Nashik has fewer reliable fuel stations, particularly ones equipped to handle the festival-season volume of vehicles. Clean rest stops with reasonable food are available at the MTDC-run facilities along NH-60, though expect longer queues during peak Kumbh weekends.
We recommend keeping a physical map or offline navigation downloaded before departure — mobile network congestion near the festival zone can make live navigation unreliable exactly when you need it most.
Group Travel From Pune
Pune has historically sent significant pilgrimage numbers to Nashik Kumbh given the relatively short distance, and chartered mini-bus or tempo traveller bookings for groups of 10 to 20 are common and well-supported by local operators. Booking a dedicated vehicle for a group this size, rather than multiple private cars, both reduces cost per person and keeps the group together for the journey itself — often becoming part of the shared pilgrimage experience.

If your schedule allows a slightly unhurried departure rather than a last-minute dash, we'd encourage treating the journey itself as the beginning of the pilgrimage rather than simply the commute to it.
A Realistic Cost Comparison From Pune
For a Pune family of four: self-driving costs roughly Rs 4,500 to 7,000 round trip in fuel and tolls given the longer distance than from Mumbai. The Shivneri bus runs approximately Rs 2,500 to 3,500 round trip for the family, with none of the driving fatigue. Given Pune's lack of a direct fast train to Nashik, we generally recommend the Shivneri bus as the best balance of cost and comfort for most Pune-based pilgrims.
