For pilgrims choosing the overnight train over flying, booking 2AC rather than 3AC makes a meaningful difference in comfort over a 15 to 20 hour journey, particularly for senior travellers — fewer berths per compartment, more privacy, and generally better-maintained bedding. Book at least a month ahead through IRCTC, since Kumbh-season demand on these routes climbs steadily as the festival approaches.
Carry your own food for at least the first leg of the journey, since pantry car quality varies and sattvic options aren't always reliably available on longer southern routes.
