The honest picture: full wheelchair accessibility throughout the pilgrimage circuit is not achievable. But meaningful participation in the Kumbh experience — including the sacred river bathing, the temple proximity, the spiritual atmosphere — is achievable with the right planning.
For wheelchair users: the outer temple courtyard at Trimbakeshwar is partially accessible — the main entrance ramp is manageable with a manual wheelchair and attendant. The Kushavarta Kund can be viewed from the top of the steps without descending, and water from the kund can be brought to the visitor in a copper vessel by an attendant. The Godavari aarti takes place at a ghat with a flat stone approach from the parking area — accessible for wheelchairs with some assistance.
The Snan Day for Differently-Abled Pilgrims
For pilgrims with mobility challenges who want to participate in the sacred Snan bathing, there are specific provisions at Nashik Kumbh: a dedicated differently-abled pilgrims area at the ghat with ramp access to the water, operated by the Kumbh administration. Trained volunteers assist pilgrims with physical immersion. The palki (palanquin) service, operated by devotees as a form of seva, can carry pilgrims from the road access point to the ghat entrance.
For those who cannot physically access the river: Kumbh Ganga Retreat maintains a sacred water service — on every Snan day, our team collects Godavari water from Kushavarta Kund at the auspicious bathing time and brings it to guests who cannot make the ghat journey. A brief ritual bath at the accommodation with this sacred water, guided by our pandit, carries full religious intention and is accepted in the tradition as equivalent when physical access is genuinely impossible.
